Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy describes how Maruti Software Solutions (“we”, “our”, “the team”) collects and uses information on useinkwell.app (the “Site”) — the marketing website for the Inkwell open-source project. It does not govern Inkwell instances you self-host; those are entirely under your control.

1. Information we collect

Information you give us

  • Inquiry form. When you submit a service enquiry, we collect your name, email address, company or publication name, the content of your brief and your WhatsApp number with its country code. We store the enquiry in our own database together with the IP address and browser type it was sent from (to spot abuse and duplicate submissions, since we accept one enquiry per person per 24 hours), and email it to our team. This information is used solely to respond to your enquiry, by email, phone or WhatsApp. To pre-select your country code we look up your country from your IP address on our own server; nothing is sent to a third party.
  • Newsletter subscription. When you subscribe to the Inkwell Letter, we store your email address to send you the newsletter. We do not share your address with third parties.

Information collected automatically

  • Server logs. Our server records each request in our own database: IP address, the page requested, response status and time, browser and device type, referring URL and timestamp. We derive an approximate country from the IP address using the public allocation files of the five Regional Internet Registries, held on our server, so no visitor data is sent to a third-party location service. Requests that look automated or abusive (for example probes for known vulnerabilities, or failed spam checks on our forms) are logged separately, and site errors are logged with the request that caused them. We use these logs only for security, spam prevention, diagnostics and aggregate traffic figures, never for marketing or profiling. Our hosting provider may also keep its own standard request logs.
  • Analytics (consent-based). This Site may use privacy-respecting analytics (Google Analytics) to understand how visitors use it. These analytics cookies are only set after you give consent via our cookie banner; if you decline, no analytics cookies are placed. We do not load Meta Pixel, Hotjar, or any advertising or cross-site tracking script, and we never use your data for advertising.

2. How we use your information

  • To respond to service enquiries and send written proposals.
  • To send the Inkwell Letter newsletter (if you subscribed).
  • To maintain the security and operation of the Site.

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties. We do not use your data for automated decision-making or profiling.

3. Data retention

Inquiry data is retained for as long as necessary to manage the business relationship and comply with legal obligations, or for up to three years from last contact, whichever is shorter. Newsletter subscriber addresses are retained until you unsubscribe. Server logs are deleted automatically: request logs after 90 days, spam and abuse logs after 180 days, and error logs after 365 days.

4. Your rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or port your personal data. To exercise any of these rights, email us at privacy@useinkwell.app. We will respond within 30 days.

5. Cookies

When you first visit, the Site shows a cookie consent banner so you can choose whether to allow analytics cookies. Your choice is remembered in the following ways:

  • Theme preference. A localStorage key (inkwell-theme) records your light/dark theme preference. This is not a cookie, is never transmitted to our servers, and contains no personal data.
  • Consent cookie. A strictly necessary cookie (inkwell-consent) stores your choice from the banner (“granted” or “denied”) for up to 180 days, so we do not ask again on every visit. It contains no personal data.
  • Analytics cookies. If — and only if — you select “Accept”, Google Analytics may set cookies to measure aggregate, non-advertising usage. If you select “Decline”, no analytics cookies are set, and declining later removes any analytics cookies set earlier. The Google Analytics script itself is not loaded until you select “Accept”.

You can change your mind at any time. Select Cookie settings in the footer of any page to reopen the banner and change your choice — withdrawing consent is as easy as giving it. Clearing the inkwell-consent cookie in your browser has the same effect.

6. Third-party services

Two Google services run on this Site. Both are listed here so you can see exactly what leaves your browser, and neither is used for advertising or cross-site tracking.

  • Google Analytics (googletagmanager.com) — aggregate usage measurement. Its script is loaded only after you select “Accept” on the cookie banner (see section 5). If you decline, or simply ignore the banner, your browser makes no request to Google Analytics at all and no analytics cookies are set.
  • Google reCAPTCHA (google.com/recaptcha) — spam protection on the forms for contact, service enquiries and the newsletter. To be clear about how this one works: it loads on the pages that carry a form, as soon as you interact with the page or scroll near the form itself, and it is not gated by the cookie banner. Google may set cookies and collect device and usage signals in order to tell people apart from bots. We rely on our legitimate interest in keeping those forms usable, since an unprotected public form is filled with automated submissions within days. This processing is governed by Google’s privacy policy.

Our own fonts are served from this domain. Every typeface used in the Site's own design is self-hosted, so reading a page makes no request to Google Fonts. The one exception is the reCAPTCHA widget described above: when it loads, Google's own code fetches a Roboto font file from fonts.gstatic.com for the widget itself. We cannot suppress that without removing reCAPTCHA.

Links to GitHub, Mastodon and X appear on the Site, but nothing is loaded from those services unless you choose to follow a link.

7. Children

This Site is not directed at children under 13 (or the applicable age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has submitted information to us, contact us at privacy@useinkwell.app and we will delete it promptly.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be noted with a new “Last updated” date. Your continued use of the Site after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.

Inkwell is open-source software. If you self-host Inkwell, you are the data controller for your readers' data. This policy does not cover self-hosted instances.
